China also issues M visas for “business or commercial activities” and F visas for “exchanges, visits, inspections, etc.” The line between such activities and “work,” which requires a Z visa, can sometimes be blurry.

An M visa may be used for commercial or trade activities in China, including:
•Meetings with business partners;
•Attending trade shows;
•Trading activities;
•Repair, installation, adjustment, disassembly, or giving instructions or training in connection with the purchase of equipment or machinery (up to 90 days);
•Providing instruction, supervision, or inspection to a project in China that has won a bid (up to 90 days);
•Being dispatched to the branch office, subsidiary, or representative office in China to complete a short-term “work” assignment (up to 90 days); and

•Participating in certain sports event as an athlete, coach, or support staff (up to 90 days).

An F visa is available for exchanges, visits, and inspections, including:
•Exchange for academic or cultural purposes;
•Non-commercial health or sports activities; and
•Non-commercial performances approved by the cultural department (up to 90 days)
The key-supporting document for an M or F visa is typically an invitation letter from a duly authorized agency (often the municipal commerce commission) or a company in China. M and F visas are typically issued valid for 1, 2, or multiple entries over for 3, 6, or 12 months, at the consular officer’s discretion. The typical stay permitted is 30, 60, or 90 days. More favorable terms are available for employees of certain multinational corporations who have established headquarters in Shanghai. In addition, recently China has entered into agreements with the United States and Canada to issue 10-year, multiple-entry M visas valid for 60-day stays. Limited extensions of stay are possible.

Paper list for Invitation Letter and M visa Renewal

M1: Applying for Invitation Letter for M/F visa (3-12 month M visa official invitation letter) 

1.Applicant’s Passport copy; 
2.Applicant's foreign country address and telephone number (need it for filling the application form);
3.Which country the applicant wants to apply the visa?
4.Applicant's detail schedule to China (with company stamp) 
5.Domestic company Business License, Code Organization Certificate, Approval Certificate (foreign invested company ) copies with official seal;
6.For 6 month Multi-entry 30 days each entry invitation letter, you need to provide 3 entries China record during the past 6 month.
For 12 month Multi-entry 30 days each entry invitation letter, you need to provide 8 entries China record during the past 1 year.
Notice: Only the company who invite you with official Invitation Letter can support you to get your M visa extension in Shanghai. So if you plan to do the M visa extension in shanghai, then we suggest the company apply the official Invitation Letter instead of the letter written by the company itself.

M2: China M visa extension - Shanghai route
1.Passport with valid M visa issued from outside of China;
2.2 Passport size Photos; 
3.Local Shanghai Registration Form Of Temporary Residence;
4.Shanghai company invitation letter to state you are the client of them -with official stamp; 
5.Shanghai company assignment letter with official stamp
6.Copy of the shanghai company official invitation letter (issued by Shanghai government) which you used to apply your M visa in the Chinese Embassy/Consulate outside. 
7.Domestic company Business License, Code Organization Certificate, Approval Certificate (foreign invested company) copies with official seal;
Important Notice:
1. Only the shanghai company who invite you here (which sent you the official invitation letter) can support you to get extension in Shanghai. 
2. If the company didn't use the official invitation letter (issued by Shanghai foreign affair department) to invite you but a letter written by the company itself. Then above F2 M visa extension service is not available for you.
3. You will keep entry, which your former visa remains. For example, if your former visa has 1 entry remaining, then your current extension will keep that 1 entry. If you have Multi-entries visa before, then your extension will also has Multi-entries.
4. Normally the extension of your stay cannot exceed your current visa stay period. For example, if you have a 30 days M visa to enter China, you can only extend it for another 30 days. Only if you enter China with 60 days M visa, then you can try with 60 days extension.
